College Dorm Essentials

Edited by Martha Kim

Moving away from home is a very exciting time. But, it’s easy to get swept away by all the things that are happening and students may feel like they are not completely prepared. Here are some items Seniors should remember to bring if they are moving into a dorm in the Fall

  • Bed Sheets You need to bring your own linens with you as well as blankets and pillows. The beds can be hard so bringing a layer of memory foam can be something preventive of discomfort

  • Alarm Clock Bringing a clock is important so that students can start their day in a responsible way- on time.

  • Hangers Generally, dorm rooms are small and the closets are even smaller. Getting plenty of hangers (hopefully the same size and shape) will help students fit more clothes in their new space.

  • Desk Lamp Some dorm rooms don’t come equipped with desk lamps so it’s incredibly useful for the late night study sessions!

  • Towels, Flip flops Students need to bring all of their own bathroom supplies! Flip flops are encouraged as well since the bathrooms aren’t always the cleanest.

  • Laundry Basket For a lot of people, this is going to be the first time they have to do their own laundry. It could be easy to forget a basket to put all their laundry in and end up attempting to haul a big pile of clothes halfway across campus.

  • Sewing Kit Mistakes happen. Being prepared for a missing button or a slight tear can turn a really bad situation into a very manageable one.

  • Pepper spray It might sound scary to start thinking about this, but it’s probably better to be safe than sorry.

  • Decorations No matter what, the dorms are now your home, so get comfortable! Bring pictures, lights, whatever you want to make it your room.
