OC Maker Competition

Edited by Martha Kim

In exchange for the 3D printer currently located in the computer science class room, the students of Computer Exploratory Science compete in a county wide competition called the OC Maker. Utilizing the computer programs and technology of AirWolf 3-D printers, students apply computer concepts to design something to enter into this competition. The prompt is to “Design and build, or significantly repurpose, a product that will solve a problem, need or want”.

The main program used is called Tinker Cad, a free online modeling software. Here students can use geometric concepts to make a 3-D rendition of their invention. After that, it is saved as an STL file and sliced, using an entirely different program. This means that it allows for their invention to be 3-D printed using the machine. The model is then printed out in layers using a melted plastic called PLA through a nozzle that moves across a platform.

The students entering the OC Maker Competition have to attempt to apply STEM( Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) concepts to their design, and work in groups of about five students all putting together the concepts they’ve learned and their own unique ideas.

Not only do the students need to print multiple versions of the final design, but they also need to create a board dedicated to explaining the problem to be solved and their solutions. In addition, they must also create a video to sell it to the judges.

Winners will be announced Friday, May 12. And until then, good luck to our students!
