Murder…scandal… drama… oh and more murder! ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder” airs on Thursdays and seasons 1 and 2 are available on Netflix. This show is sure to keep you on edge, with at least one murder per season, intense drama, and spectacular performances by Oscar winner Viola Davis portraying Annalise Keating.
Annalise Keating is a defense attorney and a professor at Middleton University. Every year, Annalise assembles a small group of students from her class to work for her along with her two associates, Bonnie Winterbottom and Frank Delphino. Her team is always competing against each other, trying to win the trophy that could get them out of an exam, as well as praise from their hard to please professor. However, this particular team has no idea what's in store for them. Michaela Pratt is an ambitious law student and aspires to be like Annalise, despite her professor's immoral actions taken to win in court. Connor Walsh, an occasionally paranoid student, is especially distrustful of Annalise. Asher Millstone is confident and is definitely one of the funny oddball characters in the series. Laurel Castillo is a shy student and keeps to herself; she becomes close with Frank Delphino and respects Annalise despite her questionable motives. Wes Gibbons values his morals above all and is viewed negatively by the others; he has a close connection to Annalise, but others just see him as her “puppy”.
In Season 1, we find Annalise and the team working on the Lila Stangard case and defending Wes’s neighbor, Rebecca Sutter, for the murder of her best friend. The prosecution argues that after getting into a fight, Rebecca was the last person to see Lila the night she died. However, as Annalise and the team dig through evidence for the trial, they discover that her own husband, Sam Keating, becomes a potential suspect for Lila’s murder since he was involved in an affair with Lila and had gotten her pregnant. Throughout the first season (on a future timeline), we find out that another murder has occurred...the death of Sam Keating. In the finale, we finally discover the murderers of both Lila and Sam. Although Rebecca's body is found soon after in Annalise's house, audiences are left with a cliffhanger wondering who could have possibly done it.
In Season 2, the show picks up with revealing Rebecca's killer, Bonnie Winterbottom, using Annalise and Frank to help her cover up the murder, claiming she ran away. Meanwhile, Annalise and the team work on a new case defending Caleb and Catherine Hapstall who are charged with the murder of their parents. Their suspected motive to kill was that they are adopted kids who were allegedly sleeping together and wanted to inherit their family’s wealth. Annalise and the team go head to head with DA Emily Sinclair who is the leading prosecutor for the Hapstall Case. DA Sinclair also takes multiple actions to take down Annalise by bugging her house and releasing dirty information of Asher's father, a respected judge. This causes him to commit suicide and Sinclair's body is found dead in a parking lot. Together, the Keating 5 cover up another murder by throwing her body off the balcony of the Hapstall residence.
With all the drama and murder happening in each episode, How to Get Away with Murder will surely keep you invested in the characters and plot. It's a must see, touching on the ideas of morality and success. The intensity increases each season, so stay tuned for more murder in the third season!
