Drunk driving is an extremely serious issue, as 10,000 people died in 2015 alone from crashes caused by driving under the influence of alcohol. That's an average of 28 people a day, and it seems to only be getting worse. But, the students and staff at Canyon want to help, which is why Mr. Reyes has assigned his Graphic Design class a very unique project.
Using the skills they have learned so far about the elements of photo manipulation in the program Photoshop, they are tasked with the project to create a T-shirt design to enter in a contest. This contest is sponsored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the students are to create a T-shirt design that represents the idea behind the "Every 15 Minutes" Program. Using images and typography, the students use what they have learned in the class to express their own interpretation of the consequences of drinking and driving.
Mr. Reyes says, "It's a great opportunity for bringing the community together to give an important Public Service Announcement." The students agree and are taking this competition very seriously. The elements being required are: an anti-drinking and driving message, good placement of graphics, and readable type/text

Jesynar Claro created a detailed and creative T-Shirt (shown on the left) displaying the words "It's your choice."
For Victoria Koos, the issue of driving under the influence was very important to her. She said, "I feel very strongly about this subject," and tried to show that through her clean cut and powerful design (shown on the right).

Hayley Leyns said that, "I added the blood splatter to try and convey a powerful message." Her shirt (shown on the left) gives a darker message about the dangers of drinking and driving.
These shirts are just work in progress, so when the students finish their designs, Mr. Reyes will submit the designs with the most potential. The winners haven't been announced, but when they are, the PTSA will print out the shirt designs and give the winning shirt to a few of the participants. Mr. Reyes also plans on providing another reward to a winner from his class because he is passionate about giving recognition to the students who put in the extra effort.
