Out with the Old, In with the New

As a person who is heavily involved with social media, I have come across all types of trends.

Yeah, yeah, I’ll admit, I did enjoy them-at first. BUT when they went viral, the entertainment they ONCE brought, died and they became something of the past. Now it is a brand new year. A chance to start off fresh, to create NEW trends, and to leave the OLD ones behind. Here is a list of trends that I think we should say goodbye to.

The first one on my list: flipping water bottles.

Originally, this trend was about flipping a plastic water bottle and landing it right side up. We all tried it, and let's be honest, we lost our minds when we were successful. It soon spread all over and the next thing I knew, EVERYONE was doing it, EVERYWHERE. People discovered they could land it upside down and if they were successful, they were given high praise. It was cool at first, but like everything else, it got old. It has become distracting and obnoxious, which is why we need to say farewell to this trend.

Next up we have dabbing. I never understood the purpose of this trend. Athletes really popularized this when they would dab after scoring. It is basically extending one arm diagonally into the air while you put your face into the inside of your other elbow. There was really nothing to it, making it very UNamusing.

Third is Harambe. We all mourned the loss of the gorilla when he was killed after a child fell into his enclosure through memes and tweets. Even I was a fan of this one. It is hard to understand whether people actually cared or if they were using the situation to create funny content. It has mostly died out, but still any remains of it should be left in 2016.

Last on my list is the mannequin challenge. This trend became popular toward the end of 2016, spreading quickly. It is done by having a camera man record everyone around them as they are frozen in interesting poses. The challenge also features Rae Sremmurd’s song Black Beatles. In the beginning it was exciting to join in, and even watch, especially when Hillary Clinton made one, but after seeing too many all over social media the song got old and so did the challenge. Hopefully it isn’t carried into 2017 because I have reached my limit on this one.

My opinions on the included trends are not intended to judge anyone who takes part in them. Do what makes YOU happy. I plan on leaving the old where they belong, and making room for the new wave of trends and memories that the new year will send. (:

Many youtubers have made videos on what they think should die out, one is attached HERE for your viewing pleasure!
