There always seems to be a cutting-edge fad when it comes to food. Whether it be a hot new dessert item, or a trendy way to brew coffee, we as humans typically gravitate towards these intriguing ideas. Some of these fads seem to quickly die out over months of popularity, though; because once experienced, how often will you really go back to eating or trying it? However, this does not seem to be the case for one trend in particular. Behold: the PUMPKIN SPICE CRAZE. Its excitement erupts around the months of September to December and doesn’t diminish at all during that time span. What makes Pumpkin Spice so sought out?

Upon entering the store during the fall season, it is hard not to spot an item without the word “Pumpkin” on the box. Brand names like Cheerios and Poptarts have even made limited edition pumpkin flavor products, a spin off from their classic flavors. Stores like Trader Joe's have an entire section solely dedicated to pumpkin spice items. For example, you can find this flavor in almost everything: cream cheese, milk, cinnamon rolls and bagels! The craze has been incorporated into every item of our existence during these months, and there is no escaping it.

Is pumpkin spice really as popular as manufacturers and famous Instagrammers make it out to be? I asked my next door neighbor, a food critic and blogger, what his opinion was on it all.

“Pumpkin Spice is revolutionary - a cultural piece of what makes this time of year so celebrated,” he explained. “You can’t tell me you don’t feel warm and cozy inside when you smell a pumpkin pie scented candle upon walking through your front door.”

He’s right. The seasonal scents and comforting flavor of pumpkin spice symbolize exactly what these months represent. Whether one likes pumpkin spice or not, the flavor signifies the start of transitioning weather and times surrounded by the warmth of good food and family and friends. Allow all things pumpkin spice to fill you with a sense of joy this holiday season, even if it means getting a laugh out of Pumpkin Spice flavored toothpaste.
