At long last, the harrowing 2016 Presidential Election has ended. Whether you’re dismayed or delighted by the outcome, it’s safe to assume that the Presidency won’t be quite the same again. The President-Elect of the US is none other than Republican candidate Donald Trump, a fact that millions are apparently still struggling to grasp, as public outrage and protests grip the nation in places like New York, San Francisco, and other major cities. The question no one seems to want to ask is: can we truly trust Donald Trump to “Make America Great Again?”
Despite mass public anxiety, there is no reason to be afraid. After all, the mark of a great democracy is its peaceful transfer of power. If anything, Trump seems humbled by the experience. During an informal meeting with President Obama at the White House, a look of shock could be seen on the face of the President-Elect. During an interview with CBS program 60 Minutes, Trump expressed his gratitude to the people of the nation, once again promising to restore the country to a position of strength and pride. When asked about mass protests in his name, Trump said he was saddened at the activities of some of his more violent supporters, and explicitly told them to “stop it right now.” He also asked the public to trust him, and not be afraid of the abrupt change of pace. Though the future of the nation may be uncertain, it’s encouraging to see such a welcoming attitude from the brash businessman. With an attitude like that, perhaps he really will make the United States “Great Again.”
