The Oak Canyon is a small oasis snuggled between the Walnut Reservoir and the rows of houses that surround it. People often visit just to take walks in the serene environments and enjoy the wildlife. People even have weddings, birthdays, and other special moments in such a beautiful place. For that reason, during the summer the Nature Center hosts the OAKS Summer Day Camp.

At this camp, children of all ages come from all over town to be educated about nature. There they do arts and crafts, nature hikes, and fun games. At the end of the weekly camp the kids all round up together and put on a play for the proud parents. Yet, this camp couldn’t be possible without the people behind the scenes- the ‘volunteens’! I was a camper then myself, and I’ve volunteered there every summer since. It has definitely been a lot of work; waking up early, setting up the camp, running back and forth doing tasks for the leaders, and supervising the children. Yet, it’s all worth it when you see those kids having a great time and learning to appreciate nature.
My fellow volunteen, Jun Roh, said, “I just really love interacting with the kids out in nature like that.” Couldn’t agree more, Jun, couldn’t agree more.
Being a volunteen at the camp has been a very rewarding and fun experience, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone needing some extra volunteer hours. If you like working with kids, being in nature, making friends, and learning a thing or two yourself, OAKS Canyon Day Camp is the volunteering experience for you!
