Welcome Comanches to the 2016 school year! As we enter into a new year with new endeavors to explore, our cheer team and song will be rallying our football team in as the team runs the ball down for a touchdown. Cheer and Song are our spirit-leading teams that perform and cheer at football games and basketball games. These teams even compete at events across country. Last year, Junior Varsity Song took 1st place at the USA National Competition and Varsity Cheer took home 1st place at King of the Bleachers Regional Competition.
Cheer and Song members work long hours before and after school in addition to their designated practice during 5th period. Their coaches Danielle (cheer) and Rocky (song) dedicate themselves to these incredible dancers and cheerleaders. According to Maykaela, a Senior on Varsity Cheer “Practices are long but they are also fun!” They work hard to do their best and support each other. Devyn Canedy, Senior on Varsity Song said “I always come back to song because of the friendships I’ve made with my team.” These girls are dedicated to this team and each other. Captain of the CHS Cheer Team Skylar Tynan says “As Captain, it is my job to be a role model and someone that my teammates look up to. That includes making sure that I am present at all events and practices and that I always have a positive attitude. As a team, we are looking forward to having a successful season this year. Our goal is to get first place at Nationals!”
The girls this week are preparing for their game this Friday at Fred Kelly Stadium against Edison High School I’ve got you covered with the insider’s report about how practices are run in preparation for the games. Song and Cheer both start their day with a running a mile and then proceed with warm ups and stretches. After, they move on to practicing sidelines for timeouts whether it’s a dance (song) or a stunt (cheer). Continuing on with practice, they work on cleaning the halftime routine. According to the Head Song Coach Rocky, the dances are “energetic and upbeat” and Alyssa Adair from Varsity Cheer says “I can’t wait for the new routine this Friday.”
On Game Day, the girls come to school in their fabulous game day uniforms. According to Hannahlei, a senior on Varsity Song, the girls go home after school and get ready for the game by meeting up for a team dinner and hangout. Once at the stadium, the warm ups and practice begins. Once the game starts, the girls stand facing the field and watch the game. Every few minutes they turn around and face the student section, to pump up the crowd and players with a cheer. During half time, song performed a routine called Rock This Party and just as Rocky stated, the girls were very energetic with sharp clean moves. Cheer also performed a fabulous half time show which looked incredible.
Cheer and Song work incredibly hard to promote spirit at Canyon High School. They dedicate themselves and understand that hard work is the only route to success. The Cheer and Song Team have a special message to all of you at Canyon High School, “Let’s Go Comanches!”
